Escola da Cidade

The select gas station is sit in Campo Limpo, suburb of a city marked by a social inequality - São Paulo. The city, just as happens in many urban places, has a lot of gas stations located in valued lands, near of main streets.

The proposal defends an articulation of these lots in urban network once they no longer function as fuel station. The improvements maid by these network are based in contemporary affairs as the social plurality and the flexibility of daily schedules.

The project has started of two spaces guidelines. The first one is  structure preservation because in addition to highlighting the presence of urban ruin, it generates some positive atmospheres like urban permeability, constant shading, night lighting and human liveliness promoted by parallel trades and services.

The other one is the relation with the neighboring favela, defending a dialogue between the formal and informal city. The street where the project is inserted is covered by several day and night bus routes, being the location of the new building strategic on the favela residents’ route.

The project interferes as less as possible on the spatial configuration of the favela, proposing a footbridge that connected the level of Candido das Neves street and the second floor of the building. Also suggests the removal of the existing wall between the gas station and the favela, setting a new front for these residences.

The design is based on strategies such as active facade, ground floor permeability, urban lighting, accessibility and noise containment.

The uses were chosen from the thematic guidelines and articulated according to the degree of privacy they demand. On these way, the ground floor has articulated four living spaces: two of them face the favela, for the childrens and the elderlys; another under the existing sunroom and the last one on the ground floor of the main block, with a commercial promotion. At the bottom of the lot was allocated a space with six points for recharging eletric cars.

The eletric energy is captured by solar panels located on the main block roof.

On the second floor is proposed an elevated living space over the sunroom. It is also there that is the glass block, a beacon for the city. The interior of the block is intended for studies and debates and is linked to the second floor of the main block, reserved for the creation of a collection.

From the third to the fifth floor there will be a 24-hour nursery, serving as support for tutors who work at night. The most private program is for women assistance, located between the sixth and eighth floor. The sixth floor focuses on initial support for women victims of violence.

The seventh and eighth are dedicated to welcoming these women so that greater support is also established for them after the denunciation.

The use of these lots for the creation of a future network that promote 24-hour use and support to women can be articulators of more welcoming and democratic cities.
