At over 335 meters tall, the roof addition to the Notre Dame Cathedral returns prominence to the structure on the Paris skyline and is taller than the Eiffel Tower. The surfaces and structure of the addition mimic the efficient elements of the Gothic style, with the framework springing upward like the ribs of the revered building’s vaults, and yet being completely contemporary, dissolving the added volume to simply a glass curtain wall. The glass structure leaps from the roof of the cathedral, not affecting the historic facades, but guiding the eye heavenward both on the exterior and interior of the structure—the addition visible through the historic overhead structure. During the day, the light refracts and reflects from the addition’s glass surfaces, creating exciting and everchanging interplay of light and shadow, and during the night, the roof addition is a shining beacon in the City of Lights.
