VERTICAL FARMING STATION _Germany _Berlin-Kreuzberg _Moritzplatz
Industrial farming has rendered our land infertile, drained precious water supplies and allowed plant diseases and pesticides to poison our food chain. Food grown and cut thousands of miles from the mouths it feeds loses its roots, its nutrients and its flavour. There is another way: We install vertical farms in former gasoline stations around the world, we’re saving thousands of food miles, preserving water and natural resources, and laying the foundation for a new urban food system. This means tastier, more nutritious food for all of us. This means hope for our planet.
Our VERTICAL FARMING STATION lays in the center of Berlin-Kreuzberg, Germany, close to the Moritzplatz. This area is a hot spot for alternative lifestyles and new ways of social communication. In the neighbourhood the PRINZESSI- NENGÄRTEN are located, a well known area for URBAN GARDENING. And the AUFBAUHAUS nearby is one of the most popular places for start ups and coworking spaces. Insofar we are situated at one of best places for radical ideas of alternative living and nutrition concepts.
At the rooftop we propose a second, an ARTIFICIAL GASOLINE STATION, realized by local artists with existing resources (upcycling). This rooftop acts as an outdoor farm (URBAN GARDENING) during daytime and as a meeting place for informal social events at the evening. At the ground floor a GREEN MARKET is situated where people can buy the herbs which are being produced in the upper floors for multiple times and during the whole year.
The advantages of VERTICAL FARMING
• 0.5 % space usage
• 0 chemical pesticides
• 95% less water
• 75% less fertilizers
• 90% less transportation
