The design of the small memorial covers an area of about 200 square meters and is located in the southeast side of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital in Hubei Province, China to commemorate the people who lost their lives in Jinyintan Hospital community due to the Covid-19.
The memorial takes the meaning of "to cover up the haze, to see the light again", and the dome roof is the dividing line between "light" and "darkness". It echoes with the semicircle shape of Jinyitang Hospital, and also symbolizes the solidarity of people against the Covid-19. The first floor is a space for reflection and commemoration, which is open on all sides and can enter the inner sunken space, giving people a sense of inclusion. A total of 18 columns inside and outside the two circles are the main load-bearing structure of the entire memorial. In order to commemorate the 18 families who donated their bodies for the Covid-19 in Jinyintan Hospital, the sky light is introduced through a hole at the top of each column, cleverly using the light to express the meaning of "there is still light in the darkness". A large tree in the middle of the building leads to the second floor. The fence around the tree is engraved with the names of the 320 people who died in Jinyintang Hospital as a way to express our condolences. People climbed the stairs through the revolving stairs around the trees, reflecting the painstaking process of people's exploration and study of the Covid-19 step by step.
The second floor is the prospect space, open and transparent, which is in contrast to the previous layer of oppression and makes people feel comfortable. A monument was set up on the second floor to honor the great contributions made by the medical staff of Jinyintan Hospital in the fight against the Covid-19. People can also look at the Jinyintan Hospital not far away from the second-floor terrace.
