The birthplace of the COVID-19, Wuhan South China Seafood Market, is located at No. 207, Development Avenue, Jianghan District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, in the northwest of Wuhan City. This market is the largest seafood market in Central China. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the market has been closed for business. Recently, the citizens of Wuhan strongly urged that the South China Seafood Market be transformed into an open space integrating commemorative and leisure experience, to commend the great sacrifice of the people of Wuhan during the epidemic and commemorating the compatriots who died due to the epidemic. The left side of the site as a whole is a monumental space and the right side is an experimental space. The plaza, the bridge, and the truss structure form a central axis, which also reflects the traditional Chinese design approach.
The traditional approach to commemorate in memorial parks and plazas is to preserve some remains of the memorial itself or to remind people of it through words and symbols. However, I would like people to experience the feeling of the event through the specific space based on the understanding of the event. Or, In other words, this type of space can give people an opportunity to rethink about life and remember the dead.
