Our design focuses on transforming a previously functioning mall into an art hub based in Navi Mumbai. The area around is isolated as such while the rest of areas are functioning. In order to activate the area, we transformed the abandoned mall into an art hub which is buzzing with people.
Art is a vast field and is appreciated by many but unfortunately only a few colleges teach art as a subject in India. By providing an art college, we hope to encourage more young people to take up art as their major.
Presently, the extensive use of materials have become hazardous to the environment, it is crucial to use ecofriendly architecture and by transforming a mall by adding elements that help reduce the overall impact of the built space on the environment we hope to address the issue.
This project focuses on the user group who wish to pursue art but apart from that it also has an impact on the surrounding businesses which have been facing loss due to lack of activity in that area. By building a college there, we intend to increase the scope for local business in that area.
Art is a form of storytelling and can't be inculcated in somebody by rote learning and the spaces are designed based on the needs of fine arts masters n bachelors student while giving importance to recreational activities for their mental stability and more of practical knowledge to turn it into a more informative and interactive experience.
The intention of our design is to inhibit the aspect of the play of light shadow effects by using alternate concrete and glass strips which thereby helps in light ventilation. The colorful glass strips act as a medium to bring out an interesting vibrancy in the interior space and also allows the structure to stand out in the context. Extensive use of green patches and plantations, bringing an aura of nature into the structure. The central triple height atrium space in the ground floor allows a sense of interaction throughout the structure. The whole planning of ground floor is based on integration factors like the exhibition, cafeteria and library spaces that would invite local visitors to experience recreation during weekends and to bringing interest about art in the visitors.
The 1st 2nd and 3rd floors are for educational purposes, college students would encounter leisure experiences with the help of yoga rooms, exercise room and informal seating spaces at every floor.
Incorporating activities other than theoretical subjects, such as gold smiting, dance and music, print making, photography usually isn’t encouraged in other colleges bringing an extensive view towards education itself. The restoration of escalators delivers a drift in the idea of the use of normal staircases in colleges. The previously functioning theatre has been restored into a rumpus cum games room and an amphitheater for the art hub.
Concluding, our project's agenda is to aggrandize art as a major as well as to preserve the environment and encouraging neighborhood community interaction.
